Few days ago, the Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU, made a statement advising students to learn skills, travel and have fun, because it’s like the strike won’t be called off anytime soon, and probably you, as a student, are confused and you are already thinking it’s too late for you to learn a skill, then I tell you it’s not too late. I’ll be telling you some skills you can still learn during this break
- Soft Skills: These are combination of communication, social, inter personal, and other skills that enable people to adapt to their environment, relate well with people, perform well, and achieve results. There are lots of platforms available where you can learn such skills such as Jobberman, and so in. You can still sign up for that, and the most interesting part is that, there are platforms in which they are taught for free and you get certified at the end of the day. All you need is just your data and a little of your time.

- Copywriting: This is currently a skill everybody is tapping into. You don’t have to be a seasoned writer before you can be a copywriter. All you have to do is just study the ways of doing it. You can Google more on this to get more understanding of what it is. Also, there are books available that explains extensively on this topic.

- Instrument: By chance, you might have been interested in learning one or two musical instrument but you haven’t been able to enrol for a training, then now is the time. Try to enrol for it now.

- Microsoft Package: some of you as student didn’t have the opportunity of learning the basic desktop publishing before now, and you have always been at the mercy of your friends to get assignments done, then now is the time to start learning, especially the Ms Word, Ms PowerPoint, Ms Excel, as these three packages are what you will constantly need and can’t run away from. Now is the time to try to learn and the juicy part is that, they are very easy to learn.

- Culinary skills: To those that have always wanted to learn how to cook one delicacy or the other, or learn how to cook from scratch, then now is the time. There are lots of YouTube channels that teaches how to cook some delicacies. All you need is your data and your time.

- Photography: I know someone might say it’s too late for him/her to learn photography, but I put it to you that it is something you can learn in a very short time, if you have the passion and dedication. Find a good photographer to train you and if you can’t afford that at the moment, then make use of the numerous tutorial videos online and be that photographer you really love to be.

- Photoshop: A lot of people, like you, might have interest in just editing. Yes, not everybody that is an editor must want to take pictures. If you’ve discovered that that is what you want, then get a good editor to train you. If that can’t be achieved at the moment, then make use of the internet. There are lots of tutorial video to teach you all you need to know in editing. Just dedicate your time to it and before you know it, you are a pro in Photoshop.

- Resume writing: As a student, if you know at one point in your life you’ll be needing a job, then it’s high time you learn how to write a resume. There are lot of resources online that will teach you how to write a professional resume, all you have to do is Google them.
These are just few of the skills you can still learn during this break. Make the best use of the time left during this break at improving on yourself.
