Apro Media Personality of the Week: Gbenga Olorunpomi

We are delighted to honor Gbenga Olorunpomi as our 45th Apro Media Personality of the Week for 2024!

Gbenga Olorunpomi, affectionately known as Gbenga Gold, serves as the Special Assistant to the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). With nearly two decades of experience in the media industry, Gbenga has established himself as a prominent figure, working alongside some of Nigeria’s most notable progressive politicians.
Gbenga began his journalism career at the now-defunct NEXT Newspapers, where he earned several awards for his captivating stories exploring the vibrant streets of Lagos. His first interview was with Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who would later become the Vice President of Nigeria. Recognizing Gbenga’s talents in Public Relations and Digital Marketing, Professor Osinbajo recommended him to the Media Office of the then-leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Under the mentorship of Mr. Sunday Dare, who was the media adviser to the APC Leader at the time, Gbenga honed his skills and emerged as a media guru. Today, Mr. Dare is a former Minister and currently holds the title of Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication and National Orientation.
In 2016, Gbenga was headhunted by the former Governor of Kogi State to serve as the Senior Special Assistant on New Media. Over the next four years, Gbenga’s efforts transformed the state’s social media presence, making it a focal point on platforms like Twitter and Facebook. After his tenure, Gbenga returned to the private sector to further refine his skills and gain new experiences.
He joined Chain Reactions Africa, one of the country’s top public relations agencies, where he led the Public Affairs desk. The agency secured the rights to promote the political campaigns of APC candidates in the Lagos state governorship and presidential races. Gbenga played a pivotal role in the strategic marketing of the candidates, leaving an indelible mark on the campaigns.
In December 2023, Gbenga joined the team of the MD/CE of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, where he oversees media activities, documents the journey of progress and promotes the agency’s excellence.
Gbenga has been married for 14 years and is the proud father of three wonderful children. His dream is to one day become the governor of his beloved state, Kogi.
