… As Imo strikers bow to original Queens
Heartland Queens football club of Owerri has been crowned the superior Queens of football in Imo state when they emerged champions of the the South East women football club Association tournament Owerri 2023.
The Owerri landladies who showed intent from the blast of the whistle till the final whistle of the referee cruised past Imo strikers Queens in pulsating 1-0 victory in the final derby encounter, all thanks to the 60th minutes solitary strike from Lucky Mary.
The Imo derby which was held at the iconic old town ship stadium tetlow road Owerri on Thursday was entertaining, fun and filled with beautiful display of soccer as both teams showed class, strength added with a spirited performance but there could be only one winner.
The Imo strikers Queen a championship side showed resilient at first half but yielded to the pressure of Onwa babes in the second half.
Onwa Babes journey through the tournament was quite dramatic as they showed class and superiority every step of the way.
The Landladies where held to a barren by GP world in the first game, walked over Maureen Mmadu with a 3-0 win, demolished Rising Star 7-1, piped First Mahi babes 1-0 and then cruised past Immaculate 5-0 to top the group A with maximum of 13 points.
At the Semi Finals, Onwa Babes outclassed Awka Angels 3-0 to set up the final clash against High scoring Imo strikers Queens who failed to score against the Superior Queens on the final day.
According to the statistics, Heartland Queens so far in the competition,
Won 6 matches out of 7,
had just 1 draw,
scored 20 goals,
Conceded 1 goal,
Kept 6 clean sheet,
And went home with the trophy as champions.
Meanwhile Awka Angels defeated First Mahi babes on penalties to seal the third place finish in an earlier encounter.
