APC’s Ahmed Aliyu, former deputy governor to Tambuwal, wins Sokoto guber poll

Ahmed Aliyu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto state, has been declared the winner of the election.

According to the result announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday evening, Aliyu secured 453,661 votes to defeat his closest rival, Saidu Umar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 404,632 votes.

Interestingly, in the 2019 election, Aliyu had also contested on the APC platform but lost to Aminu Tambuwal of the PDP, who was seeking re-election, by less than 500 votes.

Meanwhile, in the build-up to the 2015 elections, Aliyu had been selected as the running mate to Tambuwal, who was speaker of the house of representatives and governorship candidate of the APC at the time.

The duo eventually won the election, but Tambuwal had later defected to the PDP.
