6 SIGNS THAT SOMEONE IS LYING.
Unless you’re a mind reader, it’s not always easy to know if someone is lying or not. But if you pay attention to certain signs and body language, you just might be the next human lie detector.
Here are 6 ways to know if someone is lying.
1. Sudden head movements. A person may quickly jerk his head to the side, forward, backward or at an angle when asked a direct question. It is involuntary and will happen before the person responds to the question.
2. Change in breathing. This one is not as easy to notice but a person may begin to breathe heavily when lying. It is a sign of nervousness and a reflex action.
3. Less movement. People normally fidget when they feel uneasy but you should also look out for when they don’t move at all. Something might be off, especially if they were moving before.
4. Repetition of words. Under pressure, a liar may stutter or repeat words, as if in attempt to convince his/herself of the lie. It is also a way to buy more time while gathering thoughts.
5. Too much talking. When someone goes on to give you unnecessary details, it’s possible that such a person is being dishonest. Liars tend to keep talking, hoping their lies will be believed.
6. When an adult puts hands over lips, or exhibits defensive behaviour like folding arms, averting his/her gaze, or tries to cover vulnerable body parts such as throat, chest, head or abdomen, such an adult just might be lying.
BONUS POINT:
• Shuffling feet may indicate nervousness when the person is standing, meaning that the person is uncomfortable with the current situation.
• It is normal for a dishonest person to break eye contact, shifting their eyes around, but a liar can go the extra mile by not blinking at all. Watch out for cold unblinking gazes as well as rapid blinking.
Keep in mind that these are possible indicators. They are not definite proof that a person is lying. Some of the indicators could be typical of a person’s regular disposition like being nervous, or over-sharing.
Some liars are also well seasoned and might not exhibit any of these signs.
