WALK US THROUGH YOUR WORLD, WHO IS MAIKEL KAMAL?
Maikel kamal is an afro-soul independent music artiste and a computer science graduate from michael okpara University, umuahia, Abia State. Born Michael Chibuike on the 16th day of February to the Michaels’ family. I’m from Ikwuano LGA in Abia State. Second to the last kid from a family of 6. Dad is late though. May his soul keep resting. Born in Mafoluku Oshodi, Lagos but currently reside in Umuahia,Abia State.
HOW WILL YOU DEFINE YOUR SOUND?
VYYYYBE, lol.. Yeah. I define my sound as just vybes… Every of my sound is a blend of some genre with some genre to compliment some other genre,lol.. A fusion of every beautiful sound and tune I can relate my mind and mood with. I sing along every movement in my head and mind and it is just always me vybing to some beautiful sound and moment.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST WORK…
ALTE CRUISE.. An EP consisting of 5 afro-soul/alternative tracks.. Errhm, so far,the turnout is been really beautiful and encouraging. It was that project I dropped and I was convinced I was on the right track. Alte Cruise is actually a really deep project for me, it relates so much than just music to me.. It was me finding myself, my sound,creating a niche and observing my audience amidst the thoughts of giving up music for something else.. More like a redefinition of me, and yes, I was wowed by the turnout,responses and reviews.. And it was also me telling the world I am ready for the big stage.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS AN UPCOMING ARTISTE?
Well, it has been me finding my way around to the top. Being independent and still striving to make ends meet, I must tell, it is draining.. An average upcoming act’s prayer is either making enough money to push their songs to reasonable extents or finding that connection that would believe in their sounds and craft and help them push through, and I’m not far fetched from an average upcoming act. So, finding my way around my craft have been my biggest challenge so far.
WHICH NIGERIAN A-LIST ARTISTE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH AT THE MOMENT?
DAVIDO. Any time, any day. I love his zeal towards music and how he treats every bit of push strategies.. He knows the business so well and once he relates with your energy, he relates with it to the fullest and helps you grow..
ASIDE BEING A MUSICIAN, WHAT OTHER CAREER DO YOU HAVE?
Aside being a musician, I’m a musician..lol. there are a whole lot of things I can do, but i dont take none as a career aside music,they are all part-time for me..music just gives me that every joy.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?
Fried plantain,fried egg and fried fish. Maybe when I start to dey chop some kain food, my best go change. For now na fried plantain,fried egg and fried fish..lol
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIAN?
I don’t t really have a favorite musician. I listen to every good music artiste..but personality-wise, I love WIZKID and his charisma.. I love DAVIDO too, I give it to both of them as my favorites..
IF YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
Woa… That would be Introducing various platforms for every young act to get the chance to get heard, no matter where they are,whether or not they have the money and connections. It is not easy out here for reals.
WHERE DO YOU SEE MAIKEL KAMAL IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
SPOTLIGHT ooo.. I see the cameras on me. Ontop of my game, and the world celebrating me and my sounds.
WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THE CONSTANT PROBLEM Of MUSIC ARTISTES BREACHING CONTRACTS OR RECORD LABELS NOT TREATING ARTISTES FAIRLY?
Truthfully, I must tell.. A contract is a contract.. Breaching contracts have and is doing more harm than good to us growing acts. Personally, I’ve lost about 3 deals because of the fear of tomorrow now he fit breach contract. Everyone has the chance to go through paperworks before sealing any deal. Negotiate and renegotiate.. If desperacy and excitement makes anyone signs a contract that isn’t suitable to him or her, then it is not the label’s fault whatsover and however they feel they are being treated because it is business, and a business owner can either be selfish with his business or make it favorable since he is the one investing. Everyone has an agenda in business, both artistes and label executives,either ways, if you sign wetin no favor you,then it is your cross to carry..face it and finish it in good fate..
DO YOU SMOKE AS AN ARTISTE?
NO. Not my thing.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR?
Black and white..
WHAT IS YOUR SHOWER TIME LIKE, DO YOU SING WHILE IN THE SHOWER?
Hahahahahaha..like mad, na there most of my songs dey come out from. Lol
WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU?
A whole lot on my desk and aiming to push harder than I have ever.. Just finsihed a teaser video of one of my songs dropping soon.
